CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ
Plastic artist and painter
Carlos Cruz-Diez, born in Caracas in 1923 and passed away in Paris in 2019, was one of the most prominent figures of kinetic art. His work centered on redefining color as an autonomous, luminous phenomenon, independent of cultural interpretations. Through his art, he invited viewers to become aware of how perceptual relationships shape aesthetic experience, with each context offering a different encounter with the same piece.
His research established him as one of the key color theorists of the 20th century. Beginning in 1959 with his Physichromie series, Cruz-Diez explored the dynamic interaction between color and the viewer’s environment, pushing the boundaries of painting into spatial interventions. His practice emphasized participation, spatial perception, and movement, creating a new, interactive relationship between the artist, the viewer, and the artwork.
